Detroit, MI, United States (4E Sports) – Nick Bjugstad scored while Tim Thomas made three key saves in the shootout as the Florida Panthers edged the Detroit Red Wings, 5-4, Sunday at Joe Louis Arena.
Thomas finished with 26 saves while Jesse Winchester, Sean Bergenheim, Drew Shore and Brad Boyes scored as the Panthers improved to 21-24-7 after winning three of their last four outings.
Gustav Nyquist, Daniel Alfredsson, Riley Sheahan and Tomas Tatar provided the offense while Jonas Gustavsson stopped 33 shots as the Red Wings (23-18-11) saw an end to their two-game winning run.
Bergenheim put the Panthers ahead at 1:48 of the first with his 12th goal of the season from assists by Dmitry Kulikov and Mike Weaver.
However, the Red Wings countered with three goals in the second period with Nyquist scoring his ninth of the season with help from Johan Franzen.
Alfredsson added his 12th of the year at 9:31 while Riley Sheahan delivered a power-play goal at 18:15 for a 3-1 lead.
In the third, Winchester sliced the deficit to one with his seventh goal but Tatar restored a two-goal lead at 13:33 with his 12th of the year.
However, the Panthers sent the game to overtime behind Shore’s fourth of the year and Boyes’ shorthanded goal, his 13th of the season.
After a scoreless overtime, Thomas saved a snapshot from Tomas Tatar from 12 feet before Bjugstad’s 13-foot attempt went past Gustavsson.
Then, Thomas made two more saves on Alfredsson and Patrick Eaves to seal the victory.
