Columbia, MD, United States (4E) – Howard County police on Sunday identified the shooter at Maryland’s Columbia Mall as Darion Marcus Aguilar, 19, of College Park.

Aguilar shot dead two employees of a skateboard shop inside the mall and then shot himself around 11:15 on Saturday. Police temporarily locked down the mall and search for explosives after finding crude explosive devices made from flash powder and household items inside Aguilar’s backpack. Police disabled the crude bomb and found no explosives.

Aguilar’s victims were identified as Zumiez employees Brianna Benlolo, 21, of College Park and Tyler Johnson, 25, of Mount Airy. Police have yet to establish a connection between the shooter and the victims. Benlolo’s family said she has a child and was working on her first job at Zumiez.

Several shots were fired injuring five other people, who were taken to hospitals for treatment.

Surveillance cameras at the mall showed Aguilar arriving there at 10:15 a.m. A customer at the store said he saw the shooter came out of a dressing room holding a single-barrel shotgun at shot at the woman behind the counter four feet away from him.

The customer got on the ground and heard another gunfire.

Aguilar then turned the gun on himself as frightened patrons ran from the area, said Howard County Police Chief William J. McMahon during a 4 p.m. news conference.

Police and SWAT teams led people out of the mall and declared it secure around 12:30 p.m.
