London, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Formalities for Juan Mata’s move to Manchester United is expected to be completed Friday, with an agreed 37 million pounds to be paid to Chelsea.
Mata will be able to train with his new teammates over the weekend before being presented to the media next week. He is expected to make his United debut against Cardiff at Old Trafford on January 28.
Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid were Chelsea’s preferred options for a sale, but they accepted United’s bid after Mata made it clear that Old Trafford was his first choice.
Logistical issues delayed the Spaniard’s trip to Manchester for a medical exam, which was originally scheduled on Thursday.
Mata was Chelsea’s Player of the Season in each of his two full seasons with the team but has started only half of Chelsea’s Premier League fixtures so far this season and just one Champions League fixture.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said the timing of the move was unfair since Chelsea will no longer play against United.
He argued that Chelsea should have dealt Mata to United before they played last week, which the former won 3-1.
“If you want to respect fairness, that should not happen,” said Wenger. You would want that everyone is on the same level. Chelsea do not do the rules. Maybe the rules should be adapted to more fairness.”
