Milwaukee, WI, United States (4E Sports) – The Milwaukee Brewers clarified that negotiations with free-agent right-hander Matt Garza are still ongoing.
The statement negates reports that Garza has signed or agreed to a four-year deal worth $52 million with the team.
Garza. 30. is coming off two injury-plagued seasons and it was also believed that the supposed deal was pending a physical. .
The right- hander is arguably the top starting pitcher left on the market after Masahiro Tanaka signed with the Yankees Wednesday.
He has a good two-seam fastball and a propensity to give up the long ball.
Garza was 10-6 with a 3.82 ERA (106 ERA+), 1.24 WHIP and 136 strikeouts covering 155 1/3 innings last season in 11 starts for the Cubs and 13 starts for the Rangers.
In 60 starts for the Cubs, Garza was 21-18 with a 3.45 ERA (115 ERA+) and 1.21 WHIP.
He joins a rotation that includes holdovers Kyle Lohse, Yovani Gallardo, Wily Peralta and Marco Estrada.
Garza pitched for the Cubs most of the past three seasons before Chicago dealt him to the Texas Rangers at last July’s trade deadline.
