RIDGWAY – The Curwensville Lady Tide girls basketball team won on the road on consecutive nights, defeating Ridgway Tuesday, 52-24, on the Lady Elkers home floor.

The Lady Tide also swept Ridgway on the season having beaten the Elkers 57-20 back on December 13 at Curwensville.

This time, however, wasn’t quite as easy as the first go around, as the Lady Elkers, coming off their first win since the 2011-12 season, put up a valiant first half fight.  Ridgway defeated Oswayo Valley on Monday, January 13, 32-27.

The Lady Tide gained an 11-8 first quarter lead thanks to seven points by their leading scorer Ciara Strickland who came into the game averaging 20 points.

Even though Ridgway was outscored in the second quarter, 13-8, they still trailed Curwensville by just eight at the intermission, 24-16.

The first time the two teams tangled the Lady Tide had a 35-9 halftime edge.

Either Ridgway was well rested after having an eight day layoff or the Lady Tide showed effects of two straight nights on the road; it didn’t matter, the Elkers were right there with 16 minutes left to play.

Actually, Ridgway had the lead in the second eight minutes, 14-13, with 4:21 left until the half, when the Lady Tide went on an 11-0 run to take back the lead for good.

Then, unfortunately for Ridgway, the Lady Tide showed they could play defense. Very good defense as a matter of fact.

The Curwensville squad would hold Ridgway to just eight second half points, four in each quarter, while putting up 28 of their own to gather in the victory.

A 10-0 run that started with 6:20 left in the third period gave Curwensville a 35-18 margin, all but ending Ridgway’s hopes of a huge upset.

Strickland was the game’s leading scorer with 21 while teammate Tierra Shope added 10.

Ridgway was lead by sophomore Jessica Kifer who also dumped in 10.

One down side for Curwensville was at the free throw line, shooting just 8 of 24.

Lady Tide head coach Rusty McCracken said afterwards, “I thought Ridgway played tough early on, but we picked up our defensive effort in the second half which really helped us pull away.”

Then McCracken closed with, “We are certainly happy with the win which now matches last year’s total of nine, but we have a tough game coming up Friday at home against Brockway and need our fans to come out and show their support.”

The junior varsity scrap was also won by Curwensville as they stopped the Lady Elkers by a score of 30-26.

Shauna Guy paced the Lady Tide JV offense with a game high 15 points.

Curwensville is 9-4 on the 2013-14 season and will host the Lady Rovers of Brockway Friday night at Patton Hall.  The Tide won the first game over the Rovers, 46-35, in Brockway, on December 10.

Junior varsity action tips off at 6 pm and the varsity will immediately follow.
