Chestnut Hill, MA, United States (4E Sports) – Xylina McDaniel and Allisha Gray scored 16 points each to carry No. 9 North Carolina to a 73-56 victory over Boston College in Sunday’s ACC contest at Silvio O. Conte Forum.
McDaniel also grabbed eight boards while Gray had four caroms for the Tar Heels (16-3), who cruised to their 11th victory in 12 outings despite the struggles of leading scorer Diamond DeShields.
DeShields, who was averaging 23.3 points in their last three games, was limited to just 12 points on 4-for-12 shooting and had six turnovers in the game.
With the victory, the Tar Heels improved to 4-1 in ACC play, moving just a game behind leader Duke (5-0) in the standings.
The win also kept the Tar Heels perfect in five games at the Conte Forum, where coach Sylvia Hatchell won her 900th career game last season. North Carolina is 10-1 against the Eagles.
Kelly Hughes scored 13 points off the bench, Kristen Doherty added 11 points and six boards while Katie Zenevitch had 10 for the Eagles, who dropped to 11-8 (2-3 ACC) after losing three of their last four games.
Overall, the Tar Heels shot 24-for-58 from the field, including nine triples, while the Eagles made just 18 of 52 attempts for 34.6 percent.
The Tar Heels raced to an 18-10 lead after two foul shots by DeShields and a jumper by McDaniel but the Eagles kept the game close, trailing by just 32-25 at the break.
In the second half, the Tar Heels opened with a 9-3 run to increase their lead to 41-28 with 13 minutes left. They later extended it to 23, 66-43, after a triple by Gray.
The Tar Heels continue on the road at Wake Forest Thursday in Winston-Salem at 7 p.m. North Carolina will return home to host Syracuse on Jan. 30 and Miami on Feb. 2.
