Michigan St. bucks sluggish start to subdue Northwestern

Evanston, IL, United States (4E Sports) – Gary Harris scored 14 and had four steals to lead No. 4 Michigan State Spartans over the Northwestern Wildcats for their ninth straight victory Wednesday at Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Keith Appling added 11 points and Branden Dawson, fighting an illness, had 11 rebounds and three blocks.

Michigan State (16-1, 5-0) overcame a sluggish start before pulling away down the stretch.

They were 2 of 16 on 3-pointers with six airballs, with Harris missed all six from long range and Appling going 0 for 3.

Michigan State made it 40-31 with 11:36 remaining after Travis Trice’s 3-pointer and Matt Costello’s reverse layup.

It was 44-37 when Alex Gauna banked in a shot to start a six-point spurt that gave the Spartans a double-digit lead.

Foul shots by Appling that made it 50-37 with 4:59 left.

Tre Demps led Northwestern (8-10, 1-4) by scoring 10 of his 12 points in the second half.
