Columbus, OH, United States (4E Sports) – Roy Devyn Marble scored 22 points while Aaron White added 19 markers as No. 20 Iowa pulled away late in the second half en route to an 84-74 upset win over No. 3 Ohio State Sunday at Value City Arena.
Melshan Basabe and Mike Geselle added 11 points apiece while Jarrod Uthoff scored 10 points off the bench as the Hawkeyes improved to 14-3 following a second straight victory.
Basabe also grabbed 10 boards while White had six boards for the Hawkeyes, who became the first team to score more than 70 points against Ohio State this season.
LaQuinton Ross scored 22 points on 7-for-16 shooting, Amir Williams had 11 while Lenzelle Smith Jr. added 10 for the Buckeyes (15-2), who suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since Feb. 5, 2013.
This marked only the third time in the last five years that Ohio State’s lost consecutive games under coach Thad Matta.
The Hawkeyes dominated the shaded lane in the first half, scoring 30 points compared the Buckeyes’ 18, to take a 37-35 lead at the break.
However, the Buckeyes unleashed a 10-4 run, sparked by two triples from Craft and Ross, at the start of the second half to take a 45-41 lead.
The Buckeyes extended their lead to 53-46 eight minutes into the second half but three consecutive triples by Geselle, White and Uthoff tied the game at 55-all.
Marc Loving completed a three-point play and Williams added a layup to put the Buckeyes ahead, 60-55, at the 10-minute mark. However, Iowa’s Josh Oglesby scored five straight points to tie the game at 62.
Careless ball handling by Ohio State resulted in layups for Uthoff and White and a 6-0 Hawkeyes’ run for a 68-65 lead.
From there, the Hawkeyes outscored the Buckeyes, 16-9, to seal the victory.
