Houston, TX, United States (4E Sports) – Former Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel plans to accept an offer extended by coach Bill O’Brien to become Houston Texans defensive coordinator.
He was offered the job after his interview Wednesday but asked for more time to complete his committment to coach the East-West Shrine college all-star game Jan. 18 without distraction.
Crennel is seen as the favorite to become O’Brien’s defensive coordinator because of their ties as former New England Patriots assistants, although they have never worked together.
The Texans and Crennel had no immediate comment, however.
The Texans hired former Patriots linebacker Mike Vrabel to be their linebackers coach a day after Crennel met with O’Brien.
Vrabel played under Crennel but also was Ohio State’s defensive line coach and O’Brien was impressed with what he saw from the Buckeyes unit.
