London, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres scored in the second half as Chelsea grabbed first place in the Premier League standings with a 2-0 win over Hull City Saturday at The KC Stadium.
The win is Chelsea’s fifth in a row in all competitions. With Manchester City and Arsenal not playing until Sunday and Monday, Chelsea has one day to enjoy the view from the top.
Chelsea has 46 points, one point clear of Arsenal and two points ahead of Manchester City.
“Do we like to be leaders? Yes, we like, but maybe tomorrow we are second and maybe Monday we are third. The important thing is that we all know we are going in the right direction,” said Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.
After a goalless first half, Hazard broke the deadlock 11 minutes into the second period with a low drive that went past Allan McGregor’s reach.
Torres got the better of Alex Bruce three minutes from time to burst into the danger area and slide the ball beyond the Scotland goalkeeper to seal the victory.
Steve Bruce made just a single change to the side who lost 2-0 to Liverpool last time out, with George Boyd coming in for captain Robert Koren,
Jose Mourinho, for his part, gave Oscar and Willian starts after starring substitute outings at Southampton on New Year’s Day.
In other matches, Manchester United ended a three-match losing streak via a 2-0 win over Swansea City at Old Trafford.
Adam Johnson’s hat-trick inspired Sunderland to a 4-1 win over Fulham while West Ham United moved out of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win over Cardiff City.
Tottenham Hotspur downed Crystal Palace, 2-0, while Everton climbed to fourth place in the table with a 2-0 win over Norwich City at Goodison Park.
A second-half strike from Adam Lallana lifted Southampton to a 1-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.
