Tar Heels survive James Madison upset bid

Chapel Hill, NC, United States (4E Sports) – Xylina McDaniel scored 19 points for the North Carolina Tar Heels to frustrate James Madison’s upset bit 74-71 Thursday at Carmichael Auditorium.

Latifah Coleman added 14 points and Stephanie Mavunga had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

North Carolina (12-2) led 44-38 at the halftime and 46-42 early in the second half before igniting an 11-2 run to take a 13-point advantage with 14 minutes remaining.

A Toia Giggetts’ layup with about 1:15 left allowed James Madison to cut the the lead to 74-71.

North Carolina missed two 3-pointers, including one from Coleman that was blocked by Giggetts, before being called for a shot-clock violation with 9.3 seconds left.

Brittany Rountree and Coleman missed 3-pointers that gave James Madison ball possession with a second left.

But Kirby Burkholder missed a 3-point jumper as North Carolina held on for the win.

Precious Hall finished with 18 points, Burkholder had 16 and Giggetts had 14 points and 10 rebounds for James Madison.
