Houston, TX, United States (4E) – Former first lady Barbara Bush was admitted to the Houston Methodist Hospital for treatment of pneumonia on Monday and was recuperating Tuesday, the family’s spokesman said.
Mrs. Bush, 88, spent the New Year’s Eve with husband and former president George Bush, 89, watching college football on television, said Jim McGrath.
McGrath described Mrs. Bush as in great spirits and receiving fantastic care. Family members also have visited her.
It was the third time Mrs. Bush was confined at the said hospital. She underwent surgery there for a perforated ulcer in November 2008 and heart surgery to replace her aortic valve in March 2009.
Mr. Bush, the 41st president, was also admitted to the hospital in November 2012 for treatment of bronchitis, a bacterial infection and a persistent cough. He was released in January 2013.
President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama issued a statement wishing Mrs. Bush to get well on New Year’s Day. Former President Bill Clinton also wished her via Twitter well on Wednesday.
