San Juan, Puerto Rico (4E) – The U.S. Coast Guard is searching Sunday for a Canadian man who jumped overboard from a cruise ship sailing towards Puerto Rico on Saturday night.

The FBI is also investigating why Tien Phuoc Nguyen, 26, jumped overboard from the Adventure of the Seas, a Royal Caribbean International cruise ship, at 8:46 p.m. about 15 miles east of Mona Island, the company’s spokeswoman, Cynthia Martinez, said. Nguyen was sailing with his family aboard the ship when he jumped overboard.

The Coast Guard dispatched an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and the Cutter Cushing Saturday night after the cruise ship tried but failed to find Nguyen. The ship continued its trip to a port in San Juan, the destination in Puerto Rico.

Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad said they will continue the search until the probability of survival has been extended. Castrodad said the weather and seas in the area are unpredictable often turning from good to dangerous in a day.
