London, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Controversial striker Luis Suarez has signed a long-term contract that made him the highest-paid player in Liverpool history.
“I am delighted to have agreed a new deal with Liverpool and have my future secured for the long term,” said the 26-year-old Suarez, who will be paid a reported 200,000 British pounds or $327,140 a week.
“We have some great players and the team is growing and improving all the time. I believe I can achieve the ambitions of winning trophies and playing at the very highest level with Liverpool,” added Suarez, who has scored 17 goals in 11 Premier League appearances since his return from suspension in September.
Suarez’s outstanding form this season, which has helped the club to second place in the Premier League, led Liverpool to make an effort to extend an original four-year deal that he signed in 2012.
Liverpool refused to mention the length of the new deal, saying only that it was “long-term”, but sources said that Suarez will remain with the team for two more years or until 2018.
“Without doubt the backing I have received from the Liverpool fans has influenced my decision. I am so proud to represent them and go out to do my best for them every time I pull on the shirt,” Suarez said.
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers hailed the signing as “crucial” to the team’s goals.
“This is fantastic news for everyone associated with the club; the team, the owners and most importantly the supporters,” Rodgers said. “Luis is a world-class talent and securing his services is crucial for what we are trying to achieve here.”
