Houston, TX, United States (4E) – Four people died from a mysterious flu-like illness and four others are infected with the same unknown disease, the Montgomery County Health Department in Texas said Tuesday.
The fatalities aged 41 to 68 were admitted to county hospitals for flu symptoms, but their rapid flu tests turned out negative, according to Jennifer Nichols-Contella, spokeswoman for the Montgomery County Public Health District.
More tests are being conducted at the Conroe Regional Medical Center in Conroe and health officials are waiting for the lab results, Nichols-Contella said.
State officials are not yet ruling out flu as the cause of death as it is flu season. The first week of December saw Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi reporting high levels of influenza-like illness, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said,
Flu symptoms include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue.
