London, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Stand-in captain Luis Suarez recorded two goals as Liverpool grabbed solo second place with a 5-0 blanking of 10-man Tottenham Hotspur Sunday at White Hart Lane.
With his two-goal performance, Suarez now has 17 goals from 11 league outings this season while Tottenham moved two points behind Arsenal in the standings.
Jordan Henderson, John Flanagan, Raheem Sterling also scored for Liverpool, whose 10th win of the season lifted the team past Chelsea and Manchester City in the standings.
Aside from its on-field struggles, Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of a comeback was derailed after Paulinho was ejected in the 63rd minute for a high tackle on Suarez.
With the defeat, Tottenham remains in seventh place, eight points off Arsenal.
The Spurs made two changes from their previous Premier League match, with Sandro and Roberto Soldado returning and Lucas Leiva replacing Steven Gerrard, who was out with a hamstring issue.
However, Brendan Rodgers’ side began the game well and took the lead behind Suarez in the 19th minute. Henderson made it a two-goal game five minutes before the break while Flanagan added a third in the 75th minute.
Suarez completed a brace in the 84th minute while Sterling capped scoring in the 89th minute for Liverpool.
Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck scored twice as Manchester United returned to its winning ways after two straight defeats with a 3-0 win over Aston Villa.
Gary Hooper’s superb long-range effort secured Norwich City a 1-1 draw against Swansea City at Carrow Road.
The former Celtic striker showed neat interplay with Johan Elmander before unleashing a stunning volley that left Swansea goalkeeper Michel Vorm with no chance, extending Norwich’s unbeaten home run in the league to four matches.
