BROCKWAY – A spirited Curwensville Area High School wrestling team came back from a 27-12 deficit and took the Brockway Rovers into the final bout (285) tied at 33, only to lose a heartbreaker 39-33.
Veteran heavyweight Gavin Yahner of Brockway had all he could handle against the inexperienced Golden Tide big man Seth Connors before coming up with the fall in 3:19 to give the home team the win.
Connors actually took Yahner down in the first two minutes before the Rover heavyweight tied it at 2-2 going into the second period.
Yahner reversed Connors to start the second period and then locked up the pinning combination to help Brockway go to 2-0 in dual meets thus far.
Wrestling started at 106 pounds with the first three matches decided by forfeits, two in favor of the Rovers, as Brockway had a 12-6 lead before the first actual action of the night started, which was at 126.
Tide Sam Bressler used a first period takedown and an escape in each of the final two periods to win 4-2 over Mitchell Overbeck.
With Brockway leading 12-9 the Rovers picked up a pin at 132 and a Jack Glasl 6-3 decision over the Tide’s Jake Lancaster at 138 to push the margin to 21-9.
Tyler Mays, at 145 for the Tide, drew Curwensville a bit closer with an 11-5 victory over Dustin Jamison, making it 21-12 Brockway.
After a Brockway fall at 152 gave the Rovers a 27-12 lead the Tide started the comeback with a forfeit for Dakota Royer at 160 which was followed by a Trey McKenzie 8-3 win over the Michael Martino of Brockway at 170.
Suddenly, it was now only 27-21 in favor of the Rovers.
A fall at 182 pushed Brockway out to a 33-21 margin before Ben Junod of the Tide pinned Zach Tyler in 3:57 cutting into the home team’s lead, 33-27.
Junod’s fall was the only one the Golden Tide would have on the evening.
Sophomore Remington McGarry of Curwensville, at 220, picked up a forfeit to knot the team score at 33-33 before the match went to the above mentioned 285 pound bout to decide the outcome.
Veteran Curwensville coach Duane Wriglesworth spoke about the action, “I was very pleased with the effort from our guys. We made some mistakes, but we will get right to work and make the necessary corrections.”
Then Wriglesworth added, “ They (Brockway) have some studs in their lightweights and I thought we had a good shot in the heavier weights. We just needed more bonus points and after the additional two pound add on (after Christmas) we should be able to fill some more spots in our lineup and avoid some forfeits.”
Curwensville junior high won the opening match, defeating the young Rovers 30-12.
The Tide (0-1) hit the mat again Thursday December 19 when they face Ridgway at home. Listen to Curwensville-Ridgway wrestling on WOKW-FM, 102.9, starting with the pre-game show at approximately 7:15 pm.
