Knoxville, TN, United States (4E Sports) – Third-ranked Tennessee used a 9-0 run midway through the second half to pull away en route to a 75-61 win over Texas Sunday at Thompson-Boling Arena.
The Lady Vols opened the second half with a 5-0 run but Texas eventually closed the lead to 35-34. Then, the Lady Vols responded with a 9-0 run to take a more comfortable 44-34 advantage.
Cierra Burdick hit a jumper on the right wing to give Tennessee a 42-34 lead with 13:19 left. Mercedes Russell added a pair of free throws less than a minute later to stretch the Lady Vols’ lead to 10.
Isabelle Harrison led the Lady Vols with a career-high 18 points on top of eight boards. Arielle Massengale scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half and dished out a team-leading seven assists.
Meighan Simmons added 13 while Cierra Burdick had 10 points and eight boards off the bench to help the Lady Vols improve to 8-0 this season and snap the Longhorns’ three-game winning streak.
Tennessee outrebounded Texas 45-37, marking the first time a team has had more rebounds in a game against the Longhorns this year.
Chassidy Fussell and Nneka Enemkpali scored 12 points each, Krystle Henderson added 11 while Empress Davenport had 10 for the Longhorns, who slipped to 6-3.
The Lady Vols opened the game with an 11-2 run and led the rest of the way though Texas threatened several times.
The Lady Vols did not score in the final 4:12 of the first half, and a jumper by Krystle Henderson brought the Longhorns within one point, 28-27, at the break.
