Louisville, KY, United States (4E Sports) – Montrezl Harrell scored 20 points and five other teammates scored in double figures as No. 7 and defending national champion Louisville defeated Louisiana-Lafayette, 113-74, Saturday at KFC Yum! Center.
Harrell missed just one of his 10 attempts from the floor and had eight rebounds and two blocks while Chris Jones added 19 as the Cardinals recorded their highest output this season en route to their third straight win and an 8-1 mark.
Russ Smith added 16 points and had three steals to surpass the 200-career steals mark, Wayne Blackshear had 15, Terry Rozier scored 11 while Luke Hancock had 10 for the Cardinals, who improved their head-to-head record against the Ragin’ Cajuns to 9-0.
Shawn Long scored 25 points while Kasey Shepherd added 18 points but their efforts went for naught as the Ragin’ Cajuns’ four-game winning run came to an end.
Elfrid Payton tallied 12 points and 10 assists while Steven Wronkoski scored 10 for the Ragin’ Cajuns, who dropped to 6-3.
The Cardinals made 38 of 62 shots for an outstanding 61.3 percent shooting from the floor and dominated the shaded lane with 41 rebounds, 12 more than the Ragin’ Cajuns.
With Mangok Mathiang swatting four shots, Louisville recorded eight blocks and committed just eight turnovers compared to Louisiana-Lafayette’s 17.
Kasey Shepherd buried all of his three triples while the Ragin’ Cajuns made seven of 10 attempts from beyond the arc to keep the game close, 54-47, at the break.
However, the Cardinals opened the second half with an 8-2 run behind Harrell’s four points to take a 62-47 lead.
The Ragin’ Cajuns threatened for the last time after Kevin Brown made a three-pointer and Shawn Long scored on a dunk but the Cardinals replied with a 13-0 run to extend their lead to 75-54 with 14 minutes to play.
