Cleveland, OH, United States (4E Sports) – Chad Henne connected with Cecil Shorts for the go-ahead touchdown pass in the closing seconds to carry the Jacksonville Jaguars to a 32-28 victory over the Cleveland Browns Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Henne engineered a nine-play, 80-yard drive that lasted 3:15 and capped it with a 20-yard touchdown pass to Shorts as the Jaguars (3-9) bagged their second straight win. The victory was the Jaguars third in their last four games after a 0-8 start.
Henne completed 22 of 40 passes for 195 yards and touchdowns passes to Shorts and Clay Harbor. He also threw an interception for the Jaguars’ only turnover of the game.
Rusher Maurice Jones-Drew also completed an eight-yard scoring strike to Mercedes Lewis in the second period. He also ran for 77 yards on 23 carries as the Jaguars outran the Browns, 112-97.
Ace Sanders caught eight passes for 67 yards while Shorts recorded 64 yards on six catches for the Jaguars.
Brandon Weeden completed 24 of 40 passes for 370 yards and three touchdowns but had two interceptions and a fumble as the Browns slipped to 4-8 after losing their third straight game.
Josh Gordon caught 10 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns. His performance put him over 1,000 receiving yards for the season, a first for the Browns since wide receiver Braylon Edwards (1,289 yards) and tight end Kellen Winslow Jr. (1,106) in 2007.
Gordon also surpassed the 100-yard mark for the third consecutive game, becoming the third player in Browns history to accomplish the feat since Gary Collins in 1965 and Webster Slaughter in 1989.
Willis McGahee, who carried the ball 14 times for 57 yards, gave the Browns the lead with a one-yard run in the first before Henne found Harbor for an 18-yard touchdown pass to tie the game.
After Weeden found Gordon for a 21-yard touchdown pass, the Jaguars scored 14 unanswered points from a touchdown pass by Jones-Drew and two field goals by Josh Scobee to take a 20-14 lead at the break.
In the third, Weeden put the Browns ahead with a four-yard touchdown pass to Greg Little but lost the lead with an error in the fourth.
Center Alex Mack snapped the ball to Weeden but the exchange sailed over Weeden’s head and into the end zone. Weeden kicked the ball out of bounds for a safety, giving the Jaguars a 22-21 advantage before Scobee made it 25-21 with a 25-yarder.
Weeden atoned for his mistake with a 95-yard touchdown pass to Gordon but Henne had the last laugh as he connected with Shorts for the game-winning score.
