Durham, NC, United States (4E Sports) – Freshman Rodney Hood split his charities with five seconds remaining as No. 6 Duke avoided the upset ax with a hard-earned 91-90 win over Vermont Sunday at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
After Candon Rusin tied the count at 90 with a four-point play, Hood drew a foul from Clancy Rugg. He missed the first and calmly sank the second for the final count as Duke improved to 5-1 after winning its fourth straight game.
Jabari Parker scored 26 points on 11-for-16 shooting from the field with nine boards, Hood finished with 22 points for the Blue Devils, who extended their non-conference, home win streak to 106 games.
Andre Dawkins provided the spark off the bench for Duke with 16 points and Quinn Cook added 14 points and eight assists as the Blue Devils handed the Catamounts (1-5) their fourth straight loss.
Hector Harold scored 24 points off the bench, Rugg tallied 20 points, Sandro Carissimo had 16 and Luke Apfeld had 10 for the Catamounts, who shot 64.8 percent from the field compared to Duke’s 49.1 percent.
Parker extended the Blue Devils’ eight-point halftime lead to 61-49 with a dunk but the Catamounts responded with a 13-2 run to trim the gap at 63-62 with 11 minutes left in the game.
Late in the game, the Catamounts launched a 12-4 run that gave them a 78-75 lead but the Blue Devils tied the count at 79 behind two fouls shots from Hood.
The Blue Devils grabbed a four-point lead after Rasheed Sulaimon and Cook sank two foul shots each with 20 seconds left in the game.
However, Rusin sank a triple with a foul to boot from Sulaimon. He calmly sank the extra charity to tie the game with five seconds left.
