Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – Michelle Pfeiffer, after many years in show business, has revealed that she was in a breatharian cult in the 80′s, when she was still new to Hollywood.
Pfeiffer told the Sunday Telegraph’s Stella magazine that she was once in a group who believed in breatharianism, which makes one believe that a person can live without food and water.
The group was introduced to her by a couple who she said were “kind of personal trainers” who “worked with weights and put people on diets,” and believed in vegetarianism.
“They were very controlling,” the 55-year-old actress said. “I wasn’t living with them but I was there a lot and they were always telling me I needed to come more. I had to pay for all the time I was there, so it was financially very draining.”
“They believed that people in their highest state were breatharian,” Pfeiffer added. The vegan actress was also subjected to a diet that she said “nobody can adhere to,” as sunlight is believed to be all that is needed to survive.
The “Family” star she said she realized that she was in a cult when she was helping her first husband Peter Horton do research for his role in a film about Moonies.
“We were talking with an ex-Moonie and he was describing the psychological manipulation and I just clicked,” Pfeiffer said.
Meanwhile, Pfeiffer did not elaborate how she was able to escape the cult. She and Horton called it quits in 1988.
