Durham, NC, United States (4E Sports) – Rodney Hood had 21 points, nine rebounds and four assists to lead the Duke Blue Devils in salvaging an 81-65 win over the Division-II Drury Panthers at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
Amile Jefferson had 13 points and 16 rebounds, eight of which came on the offensive glass. Jabari Parker and Quinn Cook contributed 13 points apiece.
The Panthers led 38-34 at the half through the strength of their motion offense that got the No. 4-ranked Blue Devils scrambling on the defensive end.
Panthers head coach Steve Hesser said he thought the Blue Devils looked lethargic in the first half.
“All of our stuff is on potential. We are a really young basketball team that needs to get better, and we will get better,” said Blue Devils head coach Mike Krzyzewski.
The Blue Devils tied the game at 44-all after Cook’s 3-pointer with 15:01 left, and took the lead for good on a Josh Hairston lay-up two possessions later.
Another 3-pointer from Cook gave the Blue Devils a 59-48 lead with 9:45 to play.
The Panthers, who didn’t have a player taller than 6 foot 6, grabbed nine offensive rebounds in the opening half before being limited to two offensive boards in the final 20 minutes.
Cameron Adams scored 16 points Kameron Bundy added 11 points and Ian Carter had 10 points for the Panthers.
Drury led 44-41 five minutes into the second half before Duke began its decisive run.
