South Bend, IN, United States (4E Sports) – Notre Dame Irish’s defense suffered another blow after it lost linebacker Ben Councell for the season due to knee injury suffered during their 38-34 victory over Navy this past Saturday.
The 6-foot-4, 254-pound junior had 15 tackles on the season with one tackle for loss and a forced fumble.
He was the main backup to true freshman Jaylon Smith.
The game against Navy also put defensive lineman Kona Schwenke out of commission for Saturday’s game at Pittsburgh Panthers due to high-ankle sprain.
Compounding the Irish’s woes, another outside backer, Ishaq Williams, hurt his knee against Air Force and might be able to return on Nov. 23 game against BYU.
The list of players who will miss the game against the Panthers also includes Safety Austin Collinsworth has a neck strain with an MRI scheduled for Monday.
Nose guard Louis Nix’s status remains up in the air for this coming weekend as he was undergoing an MRI Sunday afternoon for a small meniscus tear.
Meanwhile left guard Chris Watt’s status is still bothered by a PCL tear. He dressed for last Saturday’s game against Navy but did not feel right warming up and sat out.
Safety Elijah Shumate (hamstring), who has not played in three straight games, and Sheldon Day, who aggravated a high-ankle sprain he had suffered earlier this season, may play this Saturday.
