Montreal, QC, Canada (4E Sports) – Defenseman Alexei Emelin has signed a four-year extension through the 2017-18 season worth a total of $16.4 million with the Montreal Canadiens.
The cap hit will be $4.1 million per year. He is still recovering from knee surgery he underwent last April.
Emelin, 27, played 105 games over the past two seasons for the Canadiens and would have been an unrestricted free agent after the season.
He scored three goals and 12 points in 38 games last season. The six-foot-two, 224-pounder added 110 hits, 47 blocked shots and a plus-2 rating.
“I love Montreal and I am confident that I will soon return to the ice fully recovered from my injury and contribute to the success of our team,” he said.
Canadiens General Manager Marc Bergevin said “hard-hitting defensemen” like Emelin are hard to find.
