Boca Raton, FL, United States (4E Sports) – Florida Atlantic Owls coach Carl Pelini and defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis resigned Wednesday after being confronted by Athletic director Pat Chun on reports relating to their alleged use of illegal drugs.
The coaches were reportedly at a social event where marijuana was used and the school determined it was in the best interest of the program that they resign.
“The University acted quickly and decisively to follow up and take action that is in the best interests of our student-athletes and the University overall,” said Chun. “I can assure you that we have no information that suggests anyone other than these two individuals engaged in these activities.”
Pelini released a statement apologizing for his “poor judgment.”
Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Wright has been named interim head coach for the remainder of the season.
Pelini, who replaced Howard Schnellenberger as coach after the 2011 season, will leave with a 5-15 record.
The Owls (2-6, 1-4 Conference USA) are coming off a 45-10 loss to Auburn. They averaged 20.8 points per game, which ranks 105th in FBS.
