Paris, France (4E Sports) – Roger Federer secured a place in the ATP World Tour Finals for a 12th consecutive time after beating Kevin Anderson, 6-4, 6-4, in the second round of the BNP Paribas Masters Thursday.
Federer joins Rafael Nadal, Djokovic, David Ferrer, Juan Martin del Potro and Tomas Berdych in the elite eight-man field. Home favorite Andy Murray also qualified, but was forced to withdraw from the event after undergoing back surgery
The 32-year-old Federer is the most successful player to compete at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, compiling a 42-9 record and winning the title seven times in 2003-04, 2006-07 and 2010-11. He finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic in last year’s final.
Federer has qualified for the 12th consecutive year, tying Ivan Lendl for the most successive appearances at the season finale. Andre Agassi holds the record for most non-consecutive appearances (14).
With the victory, Federer advanced to the third round against Philipp Kohlschreiber, who defeated Tommy Haas, 6-2, 6-2.
Defending champion David Ferrer also joined Federer in the next round, surviving a tough Lukas Rosol, 6-0, 2-6, 6-3. in 87 minutes. He will next face Gilles Simon, who fought past Nicolas Mahut, 6-4, 6-7(5), 7-6(3), in just under three hours.
Juan Martin del Potro survived 19 aces from Marin Cilic en route to a 6-4, 7-6(3) victory to advance against Grigor Dimitrov, who defeated 16th seed Fabio Fognini, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, in one hour and 52 minutes.
American John Isner set a third-round clash with second seed Novak Djokovic after edging qualifier Michal Przysiezny, 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3 in just under two hours.
Rafael Nadal, looking to win his sixth ATP World Tour Masters 1000 crown of the year, arranged a third-round clash with 2012 runner-up Jerzy Janowicz after beating Marcel Granollers, 7-5, 7-5.
Stanislas Wawrinka returned to eighth in standings for the Race to London after defeating Feliciano Lopez, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, in the second round. The 28-year-old struck 19 aces and converted two of his four break points to beat Lopez in one hour and 47 minutes.
Aside from Wawrinka, Richard Gasquet and Milos Raonic are also in contention for the eight-man field.
On the women’s side, Sam Stosur defated Elena Vesnina, 6-3, 6-3, in her first round-robin match at the Garanti Koza WTA Tournament Of Champions.
In other matches, top seed Simona Halep downed Alize Cornet, 6-4, 6-4, while Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova beat Elina Svitolina, 6-2, 6-4.
