Toronto, ON, Canada (4E Sports) – Robert Earnshaw scored his eighth goal of the season to help Toronto FC spoil Montreal Impact’s playoff bid with a 1-0 win Saturday at BMO Field.
With the loss, the Impact (14-13-7, 49 points) would have to wait for results of Sunday’s game to determine their fate.
The Impact could be headed for an early vacation if Chicago, New England and Houston win their respective games Sunday. If New England or Houston loses, the Impact will clinch a playoff berth in just their second MLS season.
Toronto, which missed the playoff for the seventh straight year, took the lead following a sloppy giveaway from Montreal in the back.
Bright Dike found Jonathan Osorio in the box and the young Canadian’s shot deflected off Earnshaw, who netted a shot past goalie Troy Perkins, in the 16th minute.
From there, Toronto’s defense, led by goalkeeper Joe Bendik, protected the lead until the final whistle.
Bendik produced a heroic save on Andres Romero with just minutes to play to preserve the clean sheet.
Toronto also had several chances to add to its lead but rookie midfielder Kyle Bekker’s attempt hit the crossbar in the 38th minute.
Earnshaw almost grabbed his second of the game less than five minutes later but goalie Troy Perkins tipped his shot over the crossbar.
With the victory, Toronto ended its season on a high note at home and earned a measure of revenge against the club that usurped them as Canadian champions earlier in the campaign.
