Basel, Switzerland (4E Sports) – Defending champion Juan Martin del Potro and five-time titlist Roger Federer will slug it out for the Swiss Indoors Basel trophy in a repeat of the 2012 title clash.
Del Potro advanced to his sixth ATP World Tour final of the year with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Edouard Roger-Vasselin in two hours and six minutes.
Federer, for his part, downed Vasek Pospisil, 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-5, for a record 10th Basel final appearance.
This is a must-win situation for the third seed Federer, who is eyeing to qualify for the season-ending championship for the 12th straight year. The event will be held at The O2 in London from 4-11 November.
Federer is currently in seventh position in the ATP Race To London and can join del Potro at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals, where the Swiss is a six-time titlist, should he win the Basel title.
Federer leads 13-4 in their head-to-head showdown but del Potro has won their past two meetings, including in the 2012 Basel final.
In Spain, defending champion David Ferrer and Mikhail Youzhny arranged their title clash at the Valencia Open 500 after hurdling separate rivals.
Ferrer displayed his vintage form with a 6-2, 6-3 win over countryman Nicolas Almagro while Youzhny ousted world No. 39 Dmitry Tursunov 6-2, 6-4 in 75 minutes.
“I feel I served well and I’m happy to be back in the final,” said Youzhny, who will vie for his 10th crown on the ATP World Tour in what will be his 21st final.
At the WTA Championships-Istanbul, Li Na defeated Petra Kvitova, 6-4, 6-2 to clinch the No. 3 spot in the world rankings and advanced to the final against Serena Williams.
Aside from being the first Asian to reach the WTA Championships-Istanbul final, Li also became the highest-ranked Asian player in tennis history.
Li is in for a touch match against Williams, who booked a spot in the final with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Jelena Jankovic.
