Washington, DC, United States (4E) – Anonymous tweets insulting officials and policies of the Obama administration since 2009 came from a White House insider, who was fired.
National Security Council (NSC) staffer Jofi Joseph, 40, admitted tweeting the insulting remarks in apology emailed to Politico on Tuesday.
“What started out as an intended parody account of D.C. culture developed over time into a series of inappropriate and mean-spirited comments. I bear complete responsibility for this affair and I sincerely apologize to everyone I insulted,” Joseph was quoted as saying in the email.
Joseph used the handle @natsecwonk to send the tweets describing Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett as a “vacuous cipher.” The Daily Beast also reported another @natsecwonk tweet insulting former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
“So when will someone do us the favor of getting rid of Sarah Palin and the rest of her white trash family? What utter useless…” the tweet said, according to CNN.
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes were not spared from the insults when @natsecwonk tweeted he doubts about the official administration accounts about the Sept. 11, 2012, attack of the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya. There were also tweets mocking Liz Cheney and Ann Romney’s physical appearance and weight, and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham’s sexual orientation.
Joseph was fired last week from his job on the NSC nuclear nonproliferation team negotiating on Iran’s nuclear weapons program following a month-long investigation that traced the anti-administration tweets to him.
White House press secretary Jay Carney said Wednesday Joseph no longer works at the State Department confirming his dismissal. Joseph’s Twitter account was also deleted, Carney said.
