San Francisco, CA, United States (4E) – Santa Rosa and Petaluma police are investigating the shooting death Tuesday of a 13-year-old boy carrying a replica of an assault rifle.
Interviews were being conducted since Tuesday night and information is to be released later, Santa Rosa Lt. Paul Henry said Wednesday morning.
Two patrolling Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies spotted Andy Lopez carrying a replica of an AK-47 assault rifle in the area of Moorland and West Robles avenues around 3 p.m. Tuesday. The deputies ordered the boy to drop the weapon and then opened fired killing him instantly, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Dennis O’Leary.
The victim’s parents were taken to the crime scene and identified their dead son at 9:15 p.m. The deputies, who were not named, were put on administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, a standard procedure.
The grief-stricken mother, Sujey Annel Cruz Cazarez, is questioning why the police shot her son dead. Friends and family members of Lopez said the replica rifle belonged to his friend and was used in playing air gun games.
Relatives described Lopez as a good kid and liked to play basketball and trumpet.
