Moscow, Russian Federation (4E Sports) – Wild card Karen Khachanov ousted former champion and third seed Janko Tipsarevic, 6-4, 6-4 , Wednesday in the second round of the Kremlin Cup.
The 17-year-old Khachanov finished the match in 77 minutes to become the youngest quarter-finalist of the season. In July, he won the European Junior Championships in Switzerland.
Second seed and defending champion Andreas Seppi reached his sixth ATP World Tour quarter-final after a 6-3, 6-2 win over fellow Italian Paolo Lorenzi.
Seppi will take on Edouard Roger-Vasselin, who won 79 percent of his service points in beating Sergiy Stakhovsky 7-5, 7-5 in 86 minutes.
Qualifier Andrey Golubev booked a spot in the quarterfinal after he knocked out sixth seed Horacio Zeballos 6-3, 6-4.
In first round action, fifth seed Denis Istomin defeated Andrey Kuznetsov, 6-0, 2-6, 6-1, to arrange a showdown with Ivo Karlovic, who beat Denis Kudla, 6-2, 6-3.
Wild card Teymuraz Gabashvili, playing in Moscow for the 10th year in a row, caused an upset when he beat eighth seed Adrien Mannarino, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
On the women’s side, Sam Stosur defeated Kaia Kanepi, 6-3, 6-1, in her opening match while eighth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova ousted Swedish qualifier Sofia Arvidsson, 6-2, 7-5.
Russian wildcard Alisa Kleybanova slammed 11 aces en route to a 7-6(2), 6-4 win over sixth seed Carla Suárez Navarro while Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova ousted third seed Maria Kirilenko in an all-Russian duel, 6-3, 6-3.
Later in the night, second seed Roberta Vinci advanced with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Elena Vesnina.
Meanwhile, Radek Stepanek advanced to the quarterfinal of the Erste Bank Open with a 7-6(4), 5-7, 7-6(5) win over Lukas Lacko. The 2005 semi-finalist will next face second seed Tommy Haas or qualifier Miloslav Mecir.
Eighth seed Lukas Rosol advanced to his fourth ATP World Tour quarterfinal of the season with a 6-3, 7-5 win over qualifier Mirza Basic while Lukasz Kubot defeated Florian Mayer, 7-6(1), 6-4.
In Stockholm, three-time former finalist Jarkko Nieminen recorded his 20th hard-court match win of the season with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(3) triumph over Benjamin Becker at the If Stockholm Open.
Nieminen goes on to face Fernando Verdasco, who fired 10 aces and saved all six break points he faced to beat eighth seed Ivan Dodig, 6-7(2), 6-1, 6-4.
Sixth seed and wild card entry Benoit Paire won his second tour-level meeting against Pablo Carreno Busta 6-4, 6-4 in 70 minutes.
At the Luxemborg Open, Andrea Petkovic made it to the second round with a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 upset win over seventh seed Eugenie Bouchard.
Other winners were Bojana Jovanovski, Katarzyna Piter and Tereza Smitkova.
