Shanghai, China (4E Sports) – Defending champion and top seed Novak Djokovic and second-ranked Rafael Nadal arranged their semifinal clash at the Shanghai Masters after dismissing separate rivals Friday.
The 26-year-old Djokovic won 80 percent of his first serve points to beat Gael Monfils, 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-4, in two hours and 23 minutes.
Nadal, for his part, defeated Stanislas Wawrinka, 7-6 (10), 6-1, to improve to 11-0 lifetime against the Swiss netter and bag his 50th ATP World Tour Masters 1000 quarter-final.
Wawrinka saved three break points en route to a 6-5 lead, before Nadal saved two set points in a 10-minute 12th game to ensure that a tie-break decided the set.
Nadal led 3-0 in the tie-break and earned his first of three set points at 6-5. Wawrinka was unable to convert two further set points at 8-7 and 9-8, before Nadal held his serve to clinch the 75-minute opener.
On the women’s side, Madison Keys reached the first WTA semifinal of her career with an impressive 6-3, 6-1 win over Zheng Jie at the HP Open in Osaka.
Keys disposed of Zheng in little over an hour to seal a last four meeting with 2009 champion Samantha Stosur, who beat Misaki Doi, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Wildcard Kurumi Nara made her maiden WTA semifinal with a 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-1 victory over Polona Hercog.
For a place in the final, Nara will play Eugenie Bouchard, who defeated Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.
In Austria, top seed Angelique Kerber defeated Patricia Mayr-Achleitner, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the semifinal of the Generali Ladies Linz.
Kerber will take on fourth seed Carla Suárez Navarro, who needed just 66 minutes to cruise past fifth seed Kirsten Flipkens, 6-1, 6-3.
In other quarterfinal matches, Stefanie Voegele stunned second seed Sloane Stephens, 5-7, 7-5, 6-0, to advance against third seed Ana Ivanovic, who beat seventh seed Dominika Cibulkova, 6-2, 6-4.
