Dandridge, TN, United States (4E) – A church bus crashed into a trailer truck and SUV on Interstate 40 in Jefferson County, Tennessee Wednesday killing eight people and injuring 14 others.
Six of 18 members of a senior adult class from Front Street Baptist Church in Statesville, North Carolina aboard the bus were killed, according to the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT). The driver of the trailer-tractor and one of three people inside the Chevrolet Tahoe were also killed.
Eight of the injured are in critical condition at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, said hospital spokeswoman Susan Wyatt. Two more are in serious condition while another two were stable, Wyatt said.
TDOT officials said the crash happened at 2 p.m. when the eastbound bus blew a tire, lost control and crossed to the westbound lane of the road hitting the Tahoe first. The bus then hit the tractor-trailer before falling into its left side. The rig caught fire
The crash stopped traffic on the highway causing a car logjam up to three miles long.
