Toronto, ON, Canada (4E Sports) – The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed five players on waivers, including veteran defenseman John-Michael Liles.
Liles, Korbinian Holzer, T.J. Brennan, Troy Bodie and Drew MacIntyre are all expected to clear waivers within 24 hours and report to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL).
Toronto opens its regular season Tuesday in Montreal, and must get its roster down to 23 by Monday afternoon.
All NHL teams must submit their season opening rosters to the NHL by 5 p.m. Monday, and all must have their caps under the $64.3 million limit for the 2013-14 season.
Liles has two more seasons beyond 2013-14 on his contract with a cap charge of $3.875 million per year.
If he clear waivers and report to the Marlies, the Leafs will only receive $925,000 of cap space relief per a stipulation in the most recent collective bargaining agreement.
The 32-year-old Liles had two goals and 11 points in 32 games for the Maple Leafs in 2012-13, and his average ice time (18:46) was his lowest in a season since 2009-10.
He also appeared in four of Toronto’s seven playoff games and averaged less than 16 minutes per contest.
In 621 games with the Leafs and Colorado Avalanche, Liles has produced 77 goals and 236 assists.
