Barcelona, Spain (4E Sports) – Barcelona forward Lionel Messi will be sidelined for two to three weeks after suffering a thigh injury against Almeria in Saturday’s La Liga match, the team announced.
Messi opened scoring in Barcelona’s 2-0 win but was pulled out in the 29th minute as a precaution.
After several tests, it was revealed that Messi has a “small injury to the biceps femoris (thigh) in his right leg”, the team said in an official statement.
“This was confirmed by medical tests undertaken by the player on Sunday morning at Medical Services Sport City,” the statement said.
Messi will not play in Barcelona’s Champions League clash with Celtic Tuesday and the Primera Division game against Real Valladolid next Saturday.
Messi’s loss came as a big blow to coach Gerardo Martino as he was already planning the trip to Scotland without injured defenders Javier Mascherano, Jordi Alba and Carles Puyol.
