Los Angeles, CA, United States (4E) – Actor Michael J. Fox has revealed that he turned to alcohol and admitted he drank “heavily” as a way of coping up when he learned about his Parkinson’s diagnosis.
In an interview with Howard Stern on Wednesday, Fox said, “My first reaction to it was to start drinking heavily,” he said. “I used to drink to party, but now I was drinking alone and … everyday.”
The 52-year-old actor was diagnosed with the disease in 1991, but only went public with it in 1999. He confessed that he self-medicated during those years before consulting a doctor.
In 2000, Fox retired from acting as a result of his worsening condition. “It felt helpless, it felt unfair in a way,” he said.
However, after a year of heavy drinking, Fox succumbed to therapy and felt that things started to “get really clear” to him, as he learned to “take one day at a time.”
“And then things started to really turn the other way,” he said. “My marriage got great.” Fox is married to actress Tracy Pollan, who he said stood by him through it all. The couple tied the knot in 1988 and they have four children together.
