London, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Birmingham City scored three goals in the second half to eliminate defending Capital One Cup champion Swansea City via a 3-1 victory Thursday at St. Andrew’s.
Daniel Burn scored in the 57th minute, Matthew Green added another after four minutes while Tom Adeyemi capped scoring in the 81st minute for Birmingham, which advanced to the fourth round. Wilfried Bony scored in stoppage time for Swansea.
Meanwhile, Javier Hernandez provided the lone goal as Manchester United advanced to the fourth round after knocking out Liverpool, 1-0, Thursday at Old Trafford
Hernandez wriggled away from Jose Enrique to touch home Wayne Rooney’s corner in the 46th minute for his first goal of the campaign.
The goal was so quick that United manager David Moyes had barely got beyond the penalty area in his walk to the home dugout when it happened.
“I think sometimes in the box it’s your movement so you can lose big defenders and markers. I think Chicha did that and he’s done great – his movement in the box is terrific,” Moyes said of Hernandez.
Luis Suarez, who returned after a 10-match suspension, almost tied the count but his free-kick struck the bar while Victor Moses’ diving header was repelled by David De Gea.
With the victory, Manchester United avenged its 1-0 defeat to Liverpool in the Premier League last Sept. 1.
Meanwhile, Arsenal’s winning streak continued as it defeated West Bromwich Albion, 4-3, on penalties after extra-time ended 1-1 to book a place in the fourth round.
Thomas Eisfeld, one of six under-21 players fielded by manager Arsene Wenger, scored in the 61st minute but Morgan Amalfitano leveled the count after 10 minutes, sending the game into extra time.
After a scoreless extra time, the game was settled via a shootout. Serge Gnabry missed the first shot but Nicklas Bendtner, Kris Olsson and Chuba Akpom and Nacho Monreal scored for Arsenal.
In other matches, Newcastle United beat Leeds United, 2-0 while Stoke City blanked Tranmere Rovers.
