London, England, United Kingdom (4E Sports) – Stevan Jovetic scored his first two Manchester City goals as Manuel Pellegrini’s side advanced to the fourth round of the Capital One Cup with a convincing 5-0 rout of Wigan Tuesday at Etihad Stadium.
Edin Dzeko and substitutes Yaya Toure and Jesus Navas also scored for City, which made 10 changes from the side which thrashed rivals Manchester United, 4-1, in Sunday’s derby at the same venue.
Wigan made nine changes from their most recent game while Jordi Gomez, Emmerson Boyce and Roger Espinoza were the only members of their side that started the FA Cup final.
City broke the ice in the 33rd minute when Dzeko scored with a fine volley before Jovetic added another at the hour-mark of the match.
Toure came off the bench to curl in what is now becoming a trademark free-kick from 20 yards in the 76th minute before Jovetic netted a second from close range in the 83rd minute.
Navas rounded off the scoring four minutes from when he broke through and fired a low shot past Lee Nicholls in the 86th minute.
Meanwhile, Chelsea held off a tough challenge from Swindon en route to a 2-0 win, thanks to first-half goals from Fernando Torres and substitute Ramires.
Torres provided the opening goal for Chelsea when he scored in the 29th minute before Ramires made it a two-goal game six minutes later.
With the victory, Chelsea can now turn their attentions to Saturday’s crucial Premier League clash againast Tottenham.
In other matches, Tottenham Hotspur blanked Aston Villa, 4-0; Burnley beat Nottingham Forest, 2-1; Hull City edged Huddersfield Town, 1-0; Leicester City defeated Derby County, 2-1; Southampton downed Bristol City, 2-0;
Sunderland prevailed over Peterborough United, 2-0; Norwich City escaped Watford, 3-2; West Ham United beat Cardiff City, 3-2; and Fulham downed Everton, 2-1.
