Durham, NC, United States (4E) – Campus police of North Carolina Central University (NCCU) shot dead a robber near the campus around midnight of Monday.
The fatality, whose identity was not released, was a suspect in a burglary and holdup near downtown on Monday afternoon when an NCCU guard spotted him, according to NCCU Police Chief Tim Bellamy.
Three NCCU police officers went out to arrest the armed man. They were fired upon in the first encounter with the suspect in a wooded area near Cecil and Lincoln streets, near the southeast part of the campus, shortly before midnight, Bellamy said on Tuesday.
The suspect ran into the woods near the NCCU’s School of Education. Durham police joined the pursuit using K-9 units and found the man. Another shootout occurred and the gunman was shot and killed on the spot.
The incident prompted a campus lockdown past 10 p.m. Monday. A siren was sounded and text messages and emails were sent out to warn students. The lockdown was lifted past 1 a.m. Tuesday.
The State Bureau of Investigation is reviewing the shooting incident while the three NCCU police who engaged the gunman were put on administrative leave as standard practice.
