Fort Worth, TX, United States (4E) – Texas state Senator Wendy Davis (D-District 10) is asking supporters Wednesday to become her Facebook and Twitter followers creating speculation that she will run for governor.
Riding high on an instant celebrity status after she was thrust to the political limelight for successfully filibustering an anti-abortion bill in June, Davis told supporters in an email on Wednesday to let their relatives and friends know her next career move by signing up to her social media network.
Davis said she will announce her political plan on Oct. 31, but those who sign up will know earlier.
The senator is gunning for either a re-election or run for the governorship. Should she decide on the latter, she will get a shot at becoming the first Democrat since 1990 to become Texas governor.
With incumbent Gov. Rick Perry retiring, Davis could face Attorney General Greg Abbott, who already amassed a $20 million campaign fund for his gubernatorial bid next year.
Although her 11-hour filibuster stalled the passage of a bill aimed at closing most clinics that provide abortion in the state, Perry called lawmakers back for a repeat session to eventually make it a law.
