Beijing, China (4E) – The iPhone 5c is targeted for consumers looking for a more affordable iPhone option. While the price is still more expensive than most Android smartphones in the market, Apple’s iPhone 5c is expected to be a big hit because of the various colors it’s available in.
But according to IDC analyst James Yan, Chinese consumers will not go after the cheaper iPhone 5c but instead go after the iPhone 5s. Yan explains that Chinese consumers seeking to flaunt their high status in society will opt for the gold iPhone 5s.
“Gold-colored gadgets are popular among high-end consumers. We are not surprised that some handset vendors have designed such products,” wrote in an e-mail to Bloomberg News.
Gadgets are like jewelry in China. you can see gold gadgets and accessories being sold by street vendors and high-end shops. Yan adds that upper-class Chinese love buying gadgets that represent a luxurious lifestyle.
“Chinese consumers generally have the ‘buying-for-face’ culture. This phenomenon is more obvious in consumer electronics.”
This is the first time Apple is offering an iPhone in gold. The 5, 288 yuan ($865) price tag does befit those looking for a luxury smartphone.
Pre-orders for the gold 5s are near sell-out as of this moment in China.
