Raleigh, NC, United States (4E Sports) – Marian Gaborik scored two goals while Sean Collins netted the go-ahead score in the third as Columbus Blue Jackets downed the Carolina Hurricanes, 5-4, in Wednesday’s preseason game at PNC Arena.
Gaborik also issued an assists, Boone Jenner added a goal and an assist while Ryan Johansen had a goal for the Blue Jackets, who improved to 3-1-0 in the preseason.
Curtis McElhinney stopped 18 of 22 shots before he was replaced by Mike McKenna in the second period. McKenna then stopped all 12 shots by the Hurricanes.
Alexander Semin tallied two goals, Eric Staal and Jeremy Welsh added one goal apiece while Cam Ward recorded 26 saves for the Hurricanes, who suffered their first preseason loss.
Semin put the Hurricanes on the board with a power-play goal with assist from Michal Jordan but Jenner immediately tied the count with help from Tim Erixon and Gaborik at 7:22.
Then, Gaborik put the Blue Jackets in the dying minutes of the first with a wristshot from 13 feet.
In the second, Welsh tied the game with a wrister from 16 feet before Semin and Staal made it a 4-2 game with goals at 4:05 and 7:23, respectively.
However, Johansen scored a power-play goal at 13:39 to cut the deficit heading into the final period.
