Boulder, CO, United States (4E) – The death toll from flooding in Colorado rose to four on Friday as the National Guard evacuated hundreds of stranded residents from their submerged homes.
The body of a 19-year-old woman swept away after getting out of her car Thursday was recovered, according to Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle.
The woman’s boyfriend was also drowned Thursday when he tried to rescue her. One person was also killed in Colorado Springs and another in Jamestown.
Boulder County officials said 80 people are reported missing.
A hundred National Guard troops arrived on 21 trucks in Lyons and evacuated stranded residents from the Boulder County town, where houses were swept off by raging water from the overflowing St. Vrain Creek. The evacuees were transferred to a shelter set up in a church near Longmont.
Helicopters were also used to evacuate and drop water and food to other residents cut off by the floods. Earlier, Chinook helicopters rescued people from the Boulder County towns of Jamestown and Eldorado Springs.There were new evacuations in Jefferson, Larimer and Weld counties Friday due to overflowing rivers and creeks.
In Jefferson County, the Bear Creek overflowed flooding Evergreen’s historic downtown and threatening to wash off roads and property downhill in Kittredge and Morrison.
Larimer County Sheriff Justin Smith there are also stranded people in Big Thompson Canyon after 17 miles of Highway 34 was damaged. A Blackhawk helicopter rescued some of the people.
State transportation officials closed Interstate 25 from the Wyoming line south to Denver and a part of Interstate 70.
The University of Colorado at Boulder and Colorado State University in Fort Collins were closed Friday as roads leading to the schools were inaccessible.
Gov. John Hickenlooper has declared 14 counties disaster hit namely Adams, Arapahoe, Broomfield, Boulder, Denver, El Paso, Fremont, Jefferson, Larimer, Logan, Morgan, Pueblo, Washington and Weld.
Torrential rains since Wednesday caused the flashfloods. More rains are forecasted on Sunday.
