Winnipeg, MB, Canada (4E Sports) – Will Ford completed a 98-yard kickoff return touchdown as the Winnipeg Blue Bombers defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders, 25-13, in Sunday’s Banjo Bowl in front of 33,500 fans at Investors Group Field.
The Banjo Bowl is the annual rematch game between the Bombers and Roughriders after the Labor Day Classic, which Saskatchewan won, 48-25.
Justin Goltz finished a modest 8-for-17 for 129 yards but had 56 ground yards and two rushing touchdowns while Ford had 162 all-purpose yards for the Bombers.
The Bombers defense was dominant, holding Darian Durant and the potent Roughriders offense in check for most of the game, not giving up a touchdown and recording eight quarterback sacks.
Durant completed 15 of 33 passes for 129 yards and an interception while Chris Milo booted four field goals for the Roughriders.
Riders veteran receiver Geroy Simon made his 1,007th career reception which moved him ahead of Terry Vaughn for second place on the CFL’s all-time receptions list. He sits only behind former Montreal Alouettes slotback Ben Cahoon, who has 1,017.
Milo put the Roughriders on the board with a 13-yard field goal but Ford retaliated with a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to put the Bombers ahead, 7-3.
Milo then made back-to-back field goals from 14 and 30 yards to give the Roughriders a 9-7 cushion midway through the second period.
A Tristan Jackson fumble off a punt led to Winnipeg’s next score as Sandro DeAngelis added a 39-yarder before Milo added a 40-yarder to give the Roughriders a slim 12-10 lead at the half.
Goltz then led a nine-play, 69-yard touchdown drive which he finished off with a 3-yard quarterback sneak to give Winnipeg a 17-12 lead which they never relinquished.
Next week, the Bombers (1-8) head to Edmonton to take on the Eskimos. Meanwhile, the Roughriders (8-1) return home to face the first-place Toronto Argonauts.
