Portland, OR, United States (4E Sports) – The Portland Timbers snapped Toronto FC’s win streak at five with a 4-0 victory Saturday night at JELD-WEN Field.
Kalif Alhassan scored before halftime while Rodney Wallace, Will Johnson and Diego Valeri provided the second half goals.
In the first minute of stoppage time, Alhassan chested down a bad clearance by TFC’s Jeremy Hall and volleyed a thunderous shot past Bendik for a 1-0 lead.
Portland dominated possession early and often, firing off 21 shots but it didn’t keep Toronto from getting more quality scoring looks.
The Timbers held on through a late TFC rally to enjoy a 1-0 lead at the half.
In the 83rd minute midfielder Diego Valeri threaded a pass to Wallace, who finished coolly past Toronto goalkeeper Joe Bendik.
Then Johnson took a nice feed from forward José Valencia and sent a missile past Bendik in the 87th minute.
Valencia set up Valeri perfectly with a cross that left Bendik out of position for the easy finish in the third minute of second-half stoppage time for their final goal.
The victory halted Portland’s two-game losing skid and allowed it to maintain their spot in the playoff picture, still tied for fourth place with 42 points from 27 games.
The loss drops Toronto FC to 4-13-10. They are in the ninth-place team in the Eastern Conference.
