Dallas, TX, United States (4E Sports) – Substitute Mario Diaz and defender Jair Benitez scored late in the second half to help FC Dallas boost its playoff chances with a 3-1 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps Saturday at FC Dallas Stadium.
With the game tied at 1-1, Diaz volleyed a Fabian Castillo cross past a helpless Vancouver goalkeeper David Ousted in the 87th minute.
Two minutes later, Benitez lofted a 50-yard goal over Ousted to seal FC Dallas’ first win at home since May 25.
The win put FC Dallas in a third-place tie in the Western Conference with the Colorado Rapids and the Portland Timbers with 40 points apiece.
However, superior goal difference has given FC Dallas and the Rapids the last two playoff slots in the West.
The loss dropped the Whitecaps to fourth in the West with 37 points.
Vancouver opened scoring in the fourth minute when midfielder Daigo Kobayashi hit a volley past Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz for his second goal of the season.
The fourth-minute strike was only the third FC Dallas has allowed in the opening 15 minutes of a match in 2013.
However, FC Dallas retaliated in the eighth minute when Castillo spotted midfielder Je-Vaughn Watson, who blasted a right-footed shot from 20 yards that zoomed straight into the upper corner of the net.
Next week, the Whitecaps play the second match of their current three-game road trip when they visit the San Jose Earthquakes.
FC Dallas hits the road to take on the Colorado Rapids in another match with big playoff implications for both squads.
