Cleveland, OH, United States (4E Sports) – Asdrubal Cabrera smacked a three-run homer while Ryan Raburn hit a three-run double as the Cleveland Indians notched their fourth straight win via a 9-4 triumph over the New York Mets Saturday at Progressive Field.
Nick Swisher also homered and knocked in two runs to bring the Indians (76-65) within 1 ½ games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for the second and final AL Wild Card berth.
Fresh off a stint on the disabled list, Corey Kluber pitched five effective frames, allowing two runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts to improve his record to 8-5.
Jonathon Niese (6-7) got the loss after giving up five runs in the first inning. He surrendered six runs on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts as the Mets dropped to 63-77 after losing five of their last six games.
Michael Bourn, who was targeted by the Mets this past offseason, ignited the Indians’ opening burst with a single up the middle and a steal of second base.
Swisher followed by pulling a pitch from Niese into the left-field corner for a run-scoring double before Santana made it a 2-0 game with an RBI single.
The Indians then loaded the bases for outfielder Ryan Raburn, who took a Niese offering to right-center field for a bases-clearing double that capped the big inning.
Niese escaped further harm in the first inning, but surrendered Swisher’s 16th homer of the season to give Cleveland a 6-1 advantage.
After that, Niese held the next 17 batters to two hits and no runs, allowing the Mets to come back into the game.
Justin Turner welcomed Vinnie Pestano with a line-drive double to the wall in left-center field, bringing Eric Young and Lucas uda across the plate to cut Cleveland’s lead to 6-3.
Juan Lagares followed by slicing a sharp grounder through the right side of the infield to trim the Indians’ cushion to two runs but Cabrera helped the Indians pull away with a three-run home run off Mets reliever Scott Atchison.
The Indians go for a sweep Sunday with Danny Salazar (1-2) against Daizuke Matsuzaka (0-3).
