Flushing Meadows, NY, United States (4E Sports) – World No. 1 Serena Williams and second seed Victoria Azarenka will meet once again for the US Open title in a rematch of last year’s final after cruising past their respective rivals Friday.
Williams dominated fifth seed Li Na, 6-0, 6-3, in one hour and 27 minutes to advance to her 21st career Grand Slam final where she will be gunning for a 17th major title.
“I was a little nervous but I was able to close it out finally,” said Williams, who defeated Azarenka in three sets last year to win the title..
“I’ve been really focused in all my practices. I look forward to it (the final). It’s great to be back in another final. Victoria is a great player and lifts her game when it counts,” she added.
Azarenka, for her part, defeated Flavia Pennetta, 6-4, 6-2, to make it to her fourth Grand Slam final and arrange a showdown with Williams, whom she defeated recently to win the title in Cincinnati.
“It’s been a long road, you know?” Azarenka said after the win. “I’m so excited. It’s an amazing feeling to be out here, fighting for that trophy.”
Azarenka was leading in the third set, 5-3, and served for the match against Williams in the 2012 final, but failed to close out the match.
“You just have to give it all your heart, all your body, all your mind,” said Azarenka of her upcoming match with Williams.
Williams won the opening set in just 29 minutes as Li hit 12 unforced errors, mostly from her forehand side.
Li took a 2-1 lead when Williams netted a forehand but it was short-lived as the American rallied from down 0-40 to break back in the next game.
Williams just had four aces, but she outplayed Li in almost every category, with 19 winners to eight and won 76 percent of first serves to just 50 for Li.
