Orient, OH, United States (4E) – Convicted kidnapper-rapist Ariel Castro committed suicide Tuesday by hanging himself with a bedsheet inside his prison cell in Orient, Ohio.
Castro, 52, was pronounced dead at 10:52 p.m. at the Ohio State University Medical Center, where he was brought after medical staff of the State Correctional Reception
Center failed to revive him. He was serving a life sentence and 1,000 years for kidnapping three women, holding them captive for 10 years in his home in Cleveland, raping and beating them during captivity, and killing a baby of one of the victims he impregnated.
Franklin County Coroner Dr. Jan Gorniak said Castro hanged himself with a bedsheet.
Castro was alone in an 8 feet by 12 feet cell separate from the prison population and checked every 30 minutes as standard policy for inmates under protective custody. He was not on suicide watch, according to prison spokesman JoEllen Smith.
Castro’s family was angry after being notified of the suicide at 1 a.m. Wednesday. In an interview with CNN, his brother-in-law, Juan Alicea, said his mother and sister last visited him on Aug. 26 and they noticed he was depressed.
Jaye Schlachet, Castro’s attorney, said there was institutional failure after his request for a psychological evaluation of his client when he was in county jail and the state’s prison reception center was denied. The evaluation could have determined if he had suicidal thoughts.
Castro’s victims, Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus, were aware of the suicide but have no comment, said Knight’s attorney, Kathryn Joseph.
